You do not bring a photo to get a REAL ID. Your state DMV takes the photo at the counter when you apply in person. What you do need is the right documents — and if you would rather skip the DMV, a U.S. passport or passport card is also REAL ID–compliant at TSA.

How the REAL ID photo works
REAL ID requires an in-person visit because the DMV has to verify your documents and capture your photo. You cannot upload your own photo for a first REAL ID.
Dress as you would for a passport photo: solid colors, hair off the face, and no hat.
The alternative: a passport card
If your state has long DMV waits, a U.S. passport card is accepted at TSA checkpoints for domestic flights and fits in a wallet.
That application does need a photo you supply: 2x2 inches, taken within six months, on a plain white or off-white background.
