Merchant Mariner Credential guide

Merchant Mariner Photo Your MMC Uses Your TWIC Photo

The U.S. Coast Guard’s National Maritime Center uses the photo from your TWIC enrollment on your Merchant Mariner Credential. For most applications, including renewals, you do not send a separate photo.

Why the MMC does not need your photo

The Coast Guard’s policy is to use the existing photograph from the TWIC system. Your MMC application pulls that image, so you do not need to print or upload one.

If you are new to the industry, complete TWIC enrollment first; that is where your photo is taken.

Before you apply

Use the National Maritime Center’s application acceptance checklist for your credential type.

  • Complete TWIC enrollment or keep it current
  • Gather your medical certificate and sea service documents
  • Submit through the NMC or a Regional Exam Center
